Text-based CAPTCHA Strengths and Weaknesses
A systematic evaluation of 15 text CAPTCHA schemes from major web sites, using a common methodology against the anti-segmentation defences each one relies on. Thirteen of the fifteen fell to automated attack. The paper distils design recommendations for CAPTCHA authors and attackers; the authors later marked it obsolete after generic text-CAPTCHA solving arrived.
