To Err.Is Human: Characterizing the Threat of Unintended URLs in Social Media
Social platforms linkify text too permissively, so a missing space after a full stop turns the next word into a domain whenever it happens to be a valid top-level domain. Attackers register those domains and serve arbitrary content to the followers of large accounts. A seven-month study found over 26,000 such unintended URLs on Twitter.
