Using Cookies For Selective DoS and State Detection ha.ckers.org web application security lab
If a site's session cookie changes length between logged-in and logged-out states, an attacker can set an oversized cookie scoped by path to a single image so that the total header just exceeds the server's limit in one state only. A JavaScript onerror handler on that image then reports whether the request failed, revealing login state. A follow-up to using cookies for selective denial of service.
