title: "The CoreBreak Attack: Turning AI Agents into Credentials Exfiltration Vectors"
description: "Managed agent tools keep the cloud instance metadata endpoint reachable from inside them, so JavaScript in AWS Bedrock AgentCore's browser or Python in its code interpreter can fetch the microVM's IAM role credentials; a hidden div on a page the agent visits is enough to make it do so and exfiltrate them. The harnesses give up more: a tool-call block sent as the last message makes Strands run that tool with no model call, and Google ADK accepts a forged approval event."

Run code. Reach data. See the web. Act on it.

Takeaways

            77
AI smashed the core pillars of security.
The rule was simple: Eliminate remote code execution

In Agent infrastructure: We hand it over

It's not a vulnerability we forgot to patch, It’s a feature

Contextual Blindness
Today Zero visibility into the chain of events

AWS Statement - AgentCore

AWS would like to thank Aviyam Ivgi for responsibly reporting their findings regarding Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime and
AgentCore harness. The researcher reported that unprivileged customer code running within the AgentCore Runtime microVM
(which is also used by AgentCore harness) could access internal services to execute commands with elevated privileges. After
reviewing the report, we confirmed that the behavior described is consistent with the intended security architecture of both
AgentCore Runtime and AgentCore harness, where each customer session runs in a dedicated, isolated Firecracker microVM that
serves as the security and isolation boundary. Command execution within the microVM is a supported capability that enables
customers to customize their runtime environment, with the microVM itself serving as the trust boundary.
As a direct result of this researcher's engagement, we published Security best
practices for AgentCore Runtime [1], which provides expanded guidance on the
shared responsibility model, including how customers should configure agent code and networking tools, scope
IAM execution roles to least privilege, and limit unrestricted access to services within the microVM.
We appreciate Aviyam's commitment to coordinated disclosure and constructive collaboration throughout this process, and we
encourage continued engagement from the security research community.

In the Python SDK, invoking an agent with content other than a string is a pointed example of this: the input is considered trusted,
run that tool directly on its next invocation,
and a tool-call block as the most recent message causes the agent to

with no model call in between. The block’s author chooses the tool and its
 arguments outright.
