Existing and non-existing paths produced different responses, letting an attacker enumerate arbitrary server-side filenames. Fixed in a Rails security release after this report."

Hi guys, I am kind of surprised no one hast reported this issue yet. (or maybe they have and due to the severity it was never patched?)

An example of this behavior would be:

[https://hackerone.com//%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../etc/passwd](https://hackerone.com//%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../etc/passwd) (which is a valid attempt even though we get an error saying file not found because..)

[https://hackerone.com//%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../etc/passwd_DOESNTEXIST](https://hackerone.com//%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../%5C../etc/passwd_DOESNTEXIST) will rediredt us to a 404 page.

Let me know if you need more info from my end.

Thanks, Ben

Hi [@nahemsec](https://hackerone.com/nahemsec) - thanks for this report. I can confirm that your proof of concept works and we have started an investigation into what is causing this problem.

Hi [@nahamsec](https://hackerone.com/nahamsec),

Just an update from our side: we've made contact with the Rails security team on this issue, they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix. In the meantime we're working on no longer serving our assets through Rails in production, this fix takes quite some time though, I'm expecting that we land that fix before the end of this week.

Again, thanks for taking the time to report this, I feel like we messed up by not spotting this earlier but thankfully you didn't expect these things to be fixed on HackerOne ;-).

Cheers,

Time for another update: The Rails team has been working on a fix for this issue. We've already received a proposed fix and are now waiting for another Rails release.

Seems like Rails has released the fix :)

I have been getting a few emails from other vendors stating they have patched it. It is fixed on HackerOne now!

Unfortunately I was recognised in the credits of the [security advisory](https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rubyonrails-security/rMTQy4oRCGk) on behalf of your report on HackerOne.

I'm requesting public disclosure so that people can actually see that you are the one that deserves most of the praise here!

## Recovery notes

Source evidence recovered on 2026-09-14. The earlier source capture (SHA-256 `3d5cb46080b29d77573cc3b1572fc0232abe80ce314607e415c95cd64bc41ba1`) is no longer available. This publication uses a separately preserved capture of the same document recorded on 2026-08-07 (SHA-256 `828d551ec7742b976eeba3431c5fbd165b78627cf4fdf235f06a05a9cda77bd6`). The existing article text is retained. The archive journal ties this replacement source to the same extracted content; differences in the published copy are documented formatting and footer cleanup. The missing earlier capture remains documented in the archive history.
